Description |
Overview of agricultural research in Eastern and Central European in the wake of the breakup of the Soviet Union and Soviet bloc by a regional representative to the CGIAR from Czechoslovakia, Josef Vik. This paper was prepared for the first meeting of the Global Forum on Agricultural Research held during CGIAR International Centers Week, October-November 1996.The consequences of changing policy environments in the region-including privatization of state owned farms, abolition of subsidies, and fall in rural incomes-and the status of research institutions are examined in terms of their implications for agricultural research requirements, priorities, and priority setting. There is an addendum on the potential role of the Czech Republic in promoting utilization of research in the region. The document was circulated as an input to the GFAR discussions leading to the Declaration and Action Plan for Global Partnerships in Agricultural Research.
