Description |
TAC response to a request made at ICW 1990 by the CGIAR for elaboration of the ecoregional approach proposed in 'A Possible Expansion of the CGIAR'. In that paper, TAC recommended increased research focused on agroecological zones defined by region, and coined the term "ecoregional".In this document, TAC reviews the needs for research on resource management, and proposes a new multidisciplinary approach, based on the need integrate resource management and productivity research, and to link policy formulation to technological development. The approach is designed to ensure that aspects of the resource endowment, as well as prevailing socio-economic environments, are factored into the planning, organization, and evaluation of research on commodities and their adoption in different ecoregional contexts.TAC recommends the use of multidisciplinary entities, with a mandate for particular problems, supported by intercenter networks. Detailed analysis of institutional and financial implications are postponed for the review of priorities and strategies to be considered at ICW 1991. Annexes include a review of IARC experience with ecoregional research.Agenda document at TAC 54 and the CGIAR Mid Term Meeting, May 1991. This final version was published as part of a compendium of documents on the expansion of the CGIAR system.
