Title Priorities and Strategies for Livestock Research in the CGIAR

Creator CGIAR Technical Advisory Committee

Description Revised TAC statement on livestock research priorities and strategies for the CGIAR. It reviews the role of livestock in developing countries, the constraints to increased livestock production, and the current status of livestock research. TAC found the level of CGIAR investment in livestock research about right at the global level, but relatively high in Africa and low elsewhere.TAC suggested continuing to concentrate on ruminants (cattle, sheep and goats), and on milk and meat. Research topics requiring attention were animal health, nutrition, and genetics; feed resources; livestock production systems; natural resources management; and policies. After considering existing program responsibilities and linkages, and various institutional options, TAC recommended the creation of a global livestock center, integrating ILRAD and ILCA, and collaborating with other CGIAR centers and outside research institutions through research networks. This final version of the paper was presented at the CGIAR Mid Term Meeting, May 1993. Various drafts (not in the collection) were considered at TAC 59 and 60 and at CGIAR International Centers Week, October 1992.
