Summary of proceedings of the Third Meeting of the CGIAR, held at the World Bank in Washington, DC on November 1 and 2, 1972, chaired by Richard H. Demuth. The Chairman announced that Australia had accepted full membership in the CGIAR.TAC recommendations concerning the research programs and proposed budgets of the six existing centers were approved. TAC proposed the establishment of an international network of plant genetic resources led by a coordinating committee to be based at FAO headquarters in Rome, and served by a system of regional germplasm collection centers. The CGIAR expressed interest but asked FAO to define its proposed role and to consult further with TAC before a CGIAR commitment was made.The Group agreed to the establishment of a network of African relay stations to work with ICRISAT, but financial support was deferred. Additional matters discussed were the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC), the West African Rice Development Association (WARDA), the location of the proposed animal disease laboratory in East Africa, socioeconomic research, and nomination of center board members by the CGIAR. Donors made statements of their intentions on financing. The CGIAR approved of a provisional system for review of centers.Annexes: List of Participants; Agenda; and indications of financing for the existing centers for 1973 and 1974.
