Summary of observations of the TAC Subcommittee on Upland Rice, discussing research requirements surrounding the development of drought-resistant, blast-resistant upland (pluvial) rice varieties and zone-specific upland rice production in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The report discusses demand, area, input requirements, ecological benefits, distribution of benefits among smallholders and others. It also considers the division of responsibility and coordination among IARCs working on rice research (IRRI, CIAT, IITA, and WARDA). Attached to the report is a second, more detailed document, "Notes on Pluvial Rice Research (with supplements on phreatic rice)" written for TAC by a consultant group headed by Dr. H. Ruthenberg.
