Description |
Report of the 1977 TAC quinquennial review of CIAT. Includes transmittal letter from review panel chairman Charles Pereira. The report reviews and makes recommendations regarding the center's mandate and its interpretation; research and training strategies; relationships with national programs and other IARCs; CIAT's Crop Production and Animal Production programs, and its organization and management. The report offers thirteen recommendations concerning among other things: stabilization of CIAT policy following a recent period of program and policy change and exemption from detailed, long-term forward planning; integration and classification of knowledge gained from CIAT's proposed study of regional ecology and economic activity; development of methods to monitor CIAT contributions to tropical agriculture; training of trainers of technical staff in Latin America and special emphasis on training for seed production; the conduct of nutrient balance studies in areas in which low-input technologies are to be applied to soils of low fertility; bean germplasm collection; provision of additional greenhouses; and the number of scientific staff devoted to animal health studies in the Beef Production Program. Discussed at TAC Sixteenth Meeting May-June 1997, approved at TAC Seventeenth Meeting September 1977, and presented at CGIAR meeting, November 1977.
