Description Background paper assessing how well existing international research on livestock diseases and animal health in Africa addresses requirements, and the need for increased CGIAR involvement in this research. This is one of a series of desk studies prepared as background for TAC panels in considering institutional options for bringing new research areas and institutions into the CGIAR system. The paper presents an overview of work underway at ILCA and ILRAD, and at the International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) and the International Trypanotolerance Center (ITC) which were being considered as prospective CGIAR centers. It assesses the modes of operation and institutional arrangements of both ICIPE and ITC.The paper also considers research underway at other national and regional research institutions, in particular CREAT in Togo and CRTA in Burkina Faso. It makes a case for better integration of research by disease type.Agenda document, TAC 51 and 52.
