Description Studies on 6 buffaloes suffering from acute and subacute mastitis have been reported. Mastitic milk had high bacterial count and pH but was low in citric acid. High pH was favourable for bacterial growth. Administration of trisodium citrate @ 12g/day in 250 ml water/animal brought about cure of these cases. Citrate was essential for milk synthesis and Ca2+ sequestration, There was decrease in bacterial count and replenishment of milk citric acid, Milk pH dropped to 6.5 which was unfavourable for bacterial growth.
