Description Endotoxic shock by the i/v infusion of E. coli endotoxin @ 5 Jlglkg BW/h for 3 h was given to 2 groups of five buffalo calves each. Group 1 was kept untreated and observed for next 4 h. This group showed a significant hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia while plasma globulins and other proteins altered only nonsignificantly along with a very prominent hypoglycaemia, hypochloraemia, decrease in plasma creatinine. Nonsignificant changes were recorded iIi plasma OPT, sodium and potassium concentration. Group-2 animals had the same experimental protocol till 3 hand were immediately treated with i/v infusion of7.2% hypertonic saline solution @4 mllkg BW in 6.5 min at the end of endotoxin infusion and were observed for next 4 h. A significant hypoproteinemia was observed during endotoxin infusion while hypoalbuminemia became more pronounced after infusion ofhypertonic saline solution. Plasma globul in and other proteins continued to alter nonsignificantIy during and after endotoxin infusion and on infusion ofhypertonic saline. A significant hypoglycaemia and hypochloraemia was observed while plasma creatinine and sodium levels varied nonsignificantly. A significant but transient hypokalemia was a characteristic feature in group 2 animals subsequent to infusion of hypertonic saline solution.
