Description The performance records of 587 Sahiwal and crossbred daughters of 47 sires maintained at dairy farm, of university during 1970-2001, were used to estimate heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations between the first lactation and life time performance traits. Model used for estimation of sire variance and component of variance considering sire as a random effect, period and season of calving and genetic group as a fixed effects. The averages for age at first calving (AFC), first lactation milk yield (FLMY), first lactation period (FLP), tirst dry period (FDP), first service period (FSP) and first calving interval (FCI) were 1321.82±10.83 days; 2711.56±46.93 kg; 331,64±4.14 days; 165.49±5.64 days; 223±5.05 days; 494.45±6.12 days respectively. Herd life (HL), productive life (PL), total lactation length (TLL), life time milk yield (LTMY) and life time milk yield per day of productive life (LTMYIPL) were 1921.61±31.14 days; 1776.20±40.42 days, 1317.34±21.96 days; 11354.06±222.38 kg and 6.69±0.09 kg respectively. Heritability estimates for AFC, FLMY. FLP, FDP, FCI and FSP were 0.26±O.08, 0.69±0.12, 0.44±0.10, 0.35±0.09, 0.47±0.10 and 0.36±0.09 respectively. Heritability for lifetime performance traits were higher than heritability estimates of first lactation traits. AFC had negative genetic correlation with all other first lactation traits and values varied From low to medium. FLMY had positive genetic and phenotypic correlations with LTMY and LTMY/PL. These results suggested that selected on the basis of FLMY would be expected to improve life time performance traits.
