Description |
At AGM01, the CGIAR decided to immediately initiate the regular Challenge Program (CP) process by calling for ideas. Of the 41 CP ideas received, 13 were recommended by the interim Science Council (iSC) and endorsed by the CGIAR for pre-proposal development. The attached pre-proposals, "The Challenge of Climate Change" and "Desertification, Drought, Poverty and Agriculture," are two of four proposals that the iSC considered meritorious and would further consider for review after meeting certain requirements. The pre-proposals will be presented in Parallel Session II. The session will provide the proponents an opportunity to receive comments and suggestions from CGIAR stakeholders. The climate change challenge program (CP-CC) will work closely with NARS, NGO and ARI partners to define the impacts of climate change on key food production systems and to identify the most rural populations most at risk. It will develop and implement farm-level adaptation strategies in response to climate change that maximize food production and security, and minimise natural resource degradation. It will identify and demonstrategreenhouse gas mitigation options that promote sustainable development in the developing world. Research activities will be linked to develop farm-level production systems that reduce abiotic and biotic stresses, improve nutrient and water use efficiency, and manage carbon effectively. This document contains seven appendices. This document was discussed during the stakeholder meeting at the AGM02 : agenda item 3.c: Session II: The challenge of climate change and desertification, drought, poverty and agriculture.
