Statement issued by the CGIAR directors general and endorsed by the CGIAR at ICW 2000 urging development of a multilateral system that facilitates access to the plant materials and genetic resources needed for effective international public agricultural research, and that promotes conditions in which the benefits of this research can most effectively reach resource poor farmers.The statement specifically urges the FAO delegates negotiating the revision of the International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture to consider including within the proposed multilateral system 24 specific crops (Annex I) which are undergoing active genetic improvement work by CGIAR centers. A second Annex lists other crops for which there is significant conservation and research activity.
