Description Researchers at the National Agricultural Research Centre in Islamabad, Pakistan, have developed a simple system for making straw more digestible to cattle.

According to Dr Amanat Ali, the technique involves dissolving 5% urea and 10% cattle manure in 40 litres of water, and pouring this over 100 kilos of straw. This is then left covered with mud for between 4 and 6 weeks.

Dr Ali says this improves digestibility by between 40 % and 60 %, and animals fed on it eat twice as much. He reports that sheep intake rose from 400 to 800 grams a day, while calves increased their intake from three kilos to five and a half kilos a day

The treatment of the straw is basically a chemical process. The ammonia molecules in urea are released when the urea is mixed with water and added to the straw. The ammonia then acts on the ligno cellulose complex of the straw and loosens it, creating an energy source readily available to the cattle. The added animal manure acts as a source of urea, as well as a source of nitrogen.
