Prophylactic drugs are helping cattle in Tanzania to survive under tsetse conditions In a two-year trial, 95 Boran cattle calves were split into three groups. One group of 37 calves was treated with the drug isometamidium chloride (Samorin) every 2-3 months; the second group of 40 calves received the drug diminazene aceturate (Berenil) every 2-3 months, while the third group of 18 calves was not treated. After 30 months, 33 calves in the first group were alive, 19 in the second group survived, but, in the third group, all 18 had died. The trials were coordinated by the International Livestock Centre for Africa, the International Laboratory for Research into Animal Disease, and May and Baker Ltd.
