Description |
As far back as October 1989 in the Newslines of Spore 23 we wrote of the danger posed to Africa by the leucaena psyllid (Heteropsylla cubana). Kenya now reports infestations of the psyllid which was originally in the coastal area but now appears to be moving inland fairly rapidly. The psyllid has also been found in Tanzania and it would seem to be well placed to invade both the Southern and Eastern African regions where leucaena is planted. Good techniques, both biological and cultural, for dealing with the threat posed by the leucaena psyllid are already widely established in Asia where the pest has been in evidence since 1984. Based on the Asian experience, data and control agents could be made available for use in Africa.
