In a bid to save its forests from extinction, the Government of e d'lvoire has announced that it will ban all timber exports as soon as the country's budget can bear the loss. The forests of Cote d'lvoire are one of the world's principal sources of hardwoods and they have shrunk from 15 to only one million hectares in the past 20 years. Some experts believe that the ban may be too late: with the forests shrinking at a rate of 300,000 ha a year and annual replanting covering 5000 ha a year, the country could be importing timber in less than a decade.
