Description |
The Southern Africa Centre for the Coordination of Agricultural Research (SACCAR) has been set up in Sebele, Botswana, to oversee cooperation and coordination in research among the nine countries of the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC). Those countries are: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania Zambia and Zimbabwe Each country has become responsible for a particular aspect of the programme. For instance, Zimbabwe is responsible for food security, while Botswana will be in charge of coordinating agricultural research for all the nine countries through SACCAR. This new centre will be operated by a very small staff, and is funded by donors from USA, Canada and Norway. One of its main roles is to ensure there is no wasteful duplication of research resources. The United Kingdom's Overseas Development Administration (ODA) is offering a research co-ordinator to assist the director in coordinating activities between the various locations within the region. It also wants to help in following up projects in which the ODA has previously been involved in Botswana. These projects are concerned with dryland farming and other integrated rural activities. The British plan to set up a small research group to deal specifically with soil and water management For further information contact: ODA Information department Eland House Stag Place London SW1 E 5DH UK Tel: 01-213 4953 The Southern Africa Centre for the Coordination of Agricultural Research (SACCAR) has been set up in Sebele, Botswana, to oversee cooperation and coordination in research among the nine countries of the Southern African Development Coordination... |
