Researchers at the Central Veterinary Institute in Lelystad in The Netherlands, have succeeded in developing a new vaccine against Marek's disease, a viral disease affecting chickens. The disease starts as an affliction of the sinews and ends with severe tumours. The disease was described for the first time in 1907 by the Hungarian Joszef Marek. Since the seventies almost all chickens in the world have been vaccinated with a Marek vaccine. This is usually prepared from a turkey-herpes virus which is not dangerous to chickens. In several areas of the USA, North Africa and Italy, new problems have arisen with Marek's disease due to new mutations of the virus against which the turkey-herpes virus vaccine builds no resistance. The new Dutch vaccine builds resistance to these new mutations. During a congress at Cornell University, the Dutch researchers presented their new vaccine in which several US firms showed interest. After rigorous testing in a quarantine research station at Plum Island (USA), permission was given to import the virus and 7 licences have already been issued.
