Description As predicted, the rains that have returned to the Sahel have also brought on a locust infestation. Mali and Burkina Faso have been the first countries to be affected and farmers have had to re-sow their crops. Senegal and Mauritania are expected to be the next countries to be affected. Despite a general mobilization, the lack of timely access to insecticides and equipment, especially in remote areas, will mean a less-than effective response to this problem. In the absence of a regional locust control agency, the already overburdened national services must assume this additional responsibility. While international aid is beginning to be dedicated to this problem it appears to be once again a case of 'too little, too late'. If the pessimistic projections come true, people in the Sahel will pay a heavy price for this failure to be ready to fight the locusts.
