Description |
Researchers at the IITA (the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture) Rwanda Farming Systems Research Project have conducted a three-year trial of five alley-shrubs to discover which of these (Calliandra calothyrsus, Cassia spectabilis, Leucaena leucocephala cv K-28m L.diversifolia cv K-156, and Sesbania sesban) had the most desirable characteristics for alley cropping. The qualities looked for are: test growth, pest resistance, deep-rooting, plentiful biomass production, and woody stems for firewood and stakes. Results suggest that all the species tested, except Sesbania, appear equally suitable for alley cropping m the high-altitude, semi-arid environment of Kagasa, Rwanda. Farmers' preferences among the species will be determined by the usefulness of their by- products for fuel and crop cultivation. The production of woody stems, for example (important in Rwanda where firewood is scarce), was highest from Calliandra.
