In Guadeloupe and Martinique a bacteriological infection is killing both local and recently introduced varieties of papaya. Chemical control has so far been of little use against this vascular bacterium. At present the only effective measure to reduce the spread of this disease is to remove systematically all infected trees. The physical barrier achieved by intercropping rows of pigeon peas, bananas or cassava with the papaya also helps to slow the spread. But the only real solution is to develop resistant varieties. Such work is currently underway in Guadeloupe.
