The cultivar YB-22 is a high yielding burley tobacco developed through pedigree method of breeding involving 324 C and Banket A1. It produces ~ 36 number of long and broad leaves with 33 good bodied curable leaves. The leaves are light yellowish green coloured, strongly puckered, sessile, broad elliptic and strongly recurved leaves with strongly pointed tip. The cultivar, YB-22 has a leaf yield potential of more than 2900 kg/ha. Cured leaf is tan coloured with good aroma. YB-22 proved to be superior in replicated trial (2010-13) with 40% mean increase in cured leaf yield (1600 kg/ha) over control, Banket A1. It also confirmed its superiority in bulk trials conducted for four years (2016-2020) with 12% increase in mean cured leaf over control, Banket A1. In the on-farm trials conducted at Vinukonda area during 2018-20, YB-22 demonstrated its promise with12% mean increase in cured leaf yield over Banket A1.YB-22 found to give significantly higher cured leaf at 200 nitrogen and 50 kg potassium. Under natural conditions, the reaction of YB-22is almost similar compared to control with respect of major diseases and pests. However, it is found to be resistant be resistant to TMV infection under artificial screening. The chemical quality parameters of the proposed variety, YB-22 were within the permissible range and comparable with control, Banket A1in replicated and on-farm trials. Farmers/traders expressed positive opinion about YB-22.In view of its consistent superior performance with higher yield (up to 2990 kg/ha) over the existing control, Banket A1 with acceptable chemical quality parameters and similar reaction to biotic stresses as control the cultivar, YB-22 was identified for release to burley tobacco growing areas of Andhra Pradesh.
