Description |
This collection is a set of images of specimens held at the Australian National Herbarium. The Australian National Herbarium, with approximately 1 million preserved plant specimens, is one of the three largest plant collections in Australia. It is unique among the Australian Herbaria in having a national focus for its collections, acquisition and research programs. The Australian National Herbarium arose from the amalgamation over the years of several herbaria managed by the Commonwealth Government. These included several CSIRO herbaria, the Forest Research Institute Eucalypt Collection, the Forest Research Institute's Atherton Rainforest Collection, and the Australian National Botanic Gardens Herbarium. The CSIRO's core collection, previously known as 'Herbarium Australiense', was renamed 'Australian National Herbarium' in 1984. The Australian National Herbarium is a program of the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research and a contributor to Australia's Virtual Herbarium. Specimens within the main collection have been collected and managed as a joint venture with the Australian Government's Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. Specimens from the Australian Tropical Herbarium have been collected and managed as a joint venture with James Cook University and the Queensland Government. |
