Description |
Under the media analysis initiative, a key focus of the advocacy initiative was to track the news/messages related to HIV and the key population in six states (e.g. Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur and Nagaland), where the Avahan program was being undertaken. It was recognized that to be able to work closely with stakeholders such as program implementers, policy makers, community on the one hand and the media on the other; it was essential to track what was being placed on the media domain; the discourse outside the media domain, the gaps, people who were being projected on the media and the messages. The 22 districts across six states were selected based on the criteria of those areas where Avahan NGOs were intervening on the ground. Needless to state the main criteria of selection of the districts, newspapers were based on the advocacy interventions that were being planned in the state i.e. journalists to be trained; districts in which the program was strong, or community leaders who would be able to help shape the media discourse amongst others.
