Description |
This study identifies areas where intravenous drug users (IDUs) can be found in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces in Northern Thailand. It also describes their drug use and injecting behavior, sexual behavior, and the influence of key motivation, ability, and opportunity factors on injecting behavior, participation in methadone assessment therapy (MAT), and condom use. Findings from this study serve as baseline measures for key indicators that will be used to assess the impact of PSI/Thailand's intervention efforts with IDUs. The study comprised two phases: Mapping IDUs' communities and health providers, and a baseline survey. Mapping was conducted in seven districts each in Chiang Mai province and Chiang Rai province. Areas were identified where secondary data showed that high numbers of IDUs reside. Forty-two qualitative interviews were then conducted with key informants from health or administrative offices/organizations to assess the drug-use situation in selected areas and to begin to collect baseline data.
