Description Increasing use of online environments for educational practice and research has lead to availability of large data sets that provide opportunities for assessment, evaluation and personalization. Educational Data Mining (EDM) has been a growing field that has shown some of the methodologies and frameworks that can be utilized. However Evidence Centered Design (ECD) can be a complementary approach to building studies that make EDM more meaningful. This study looked at educational research from 2000 onwards that have used click track data and found that majority of the uses were at a very basic level of operationalization and analysis. Emerging studies that use both ECD and EDM show promise to be the best practice in using click track data for online research.
