Description |
This TRaC survey was conducted to investigate the practice and determinants of safe water treatment among urban and peri-urban households in two target provinces for PSI's social marketing of SafeWat a water purification product. Results will be used to develop and refine marketing strategies, including focused communications aimed at increasing informed demand for and use of SafeWat, handwashing, and proper water storage techniques. 365 male and female adults (aged 18-72) were interviewed in An Giang and Can Tho provinces in the South of Vietnam. Multi-stage cluster sampling was used to select households in urban and peri-urban districts in and around Long Xuyen city (in An Giang) and Can Tho city. Simple random sampling was used to select communes/precincts within districts and clusters within the selected communes/precincts. Seven households were in each cluster, and households were sampled by door-to-door visiting, with the first household chosen randomly. One respondent the wife/mother or person responsible for purchasing most household goods was interviewed in each household. Lists of sampling units, such as districts, precincts, communes, and households, were obtained from the local People's Committee. The questionnaire collected information on practices of safe water treatment, storage, and handwashing, opinions about treating water, knowledge about causes/prevention of diarrhea and effective methods of water treatment, socio-demographic characteristics, and exposure to information about diarrhea prevention/treatment and advertisements for water purification products. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify significant factors associated with consistent safe water treatment. Simple frequencies and means were run on descriptive data for monitoring purposes. |
