Description |
The purpose of this study was to attempt to fill a gap in knowledge of past and contemporary Chicano family values and beliefs, and to gain a female perspective on the understanding of family life. The sample consisted of 51 Chicanos (22 women and 29 men) who had been living in the San Joaquin Valley for over thirty years. Single interviews were conducted with each participant. In four cases, spouses were interviewed together. The interviews consisted of open-ended questions on topics such as racial identity, racial dynamics in community, cultural activities, schooling, dating, early marriage, work, gender roles, and family. Additional questions focused on historical events and eras such as strikes during the 1930s, unions, the Depression, World War II, the Work Projects Administration, and the 1960s. Demographic sheets which include information about the participants' parents, education, occupation, political affiliation, marital status, and other family characteristics were also completed for each participant. The Murray Research Archive holds interview transcripts with 46 demographic sheets. The principal investigator conducted 18 oral history interviews in Spanish. The collection also includes the transcripts in electronic text file format. |
