Description The purpose of this educational ethnographic study was "to identify factors which impede, and those which faci
litate success in school for Punjabi youth", and which factors contribute to improved student race relations, and also to augment an understanding of the process of immigrant adaptation and acculturation, and its influence on school performance while expanding knowledge about Punjabi Sikhs living in America. Participant observation of Punjabi and White communities focused on community and school affairs over a two year period.


The core sample consisted of 44 Punjabi (25 female, 19 male), and 42 White (19 female, 23male) high school students, ranging from 16 to18 years of age, and their parents. The Punjabi Education Project was conducted between May, 1980 and March, 1982 in California. All senior year Punjabi students were included in the sample, and compared with a sample of White students entering their senior year. Data were also gathered for all Punjabi-American (N=231), Mexican-American (N=217) high
school students, and a random stratified (sex and grade) sample of all remaining students (N=192). Seventy-five educators (15 Punjabi, and 60 non-Punjabi) also participated.


Students and parents from both groups were interviewed. Most interviews with students and parents were tape recorded and transcribed, and/or translated from Punjabi where necessary. Participating students completed a Questionnaire for High School Seniors with a version for Punjabi students and another version for White students. Educators completed the Valleyside High School Faculty Questionnaire. Quantitative data were also collected on participating students.

The stu
dy covered such topics as student academic performance; employment; perceptions of success; family orientation; economic status; self-reliance; social relations; Americanization and culture change.
