Description |
Effective party competition measured at the country-year level for 20 Latin American countries between 1946 and 2007. C_h is the value of the competitiveness index for the lower (or only) house of the national legislature, C_s is the value of the index for the upper house, and C is the average competition score for the two chambers. In this version, government parties other than the president's party were identified based on post-electoral coalitions (when information was available). The index was calculated for democratic regimes and for non-democratic regimes with a legislature (be aware that interpretation of this indicator in non-democratic contexts requires additional judgement). See the reference article for a definition of the index.
