Description The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes of superintendents and Board of Education members toward the employment and effectiveness of women in public school administration.

The sample consisted of 84 school superintendents and 321 school board members from the state of Connecticut in 1970. There was a response rate of 64% for superintendents and 25% for board members. The school board respondents represented 101 of the 133 Connecticut school districts.

The mailed questionnaire consisted of the Ringness Attitude Scale and a background data questionnaire. The Ringness Attitude Scale was a 26-item scale which required respondents to indicate the level to which they agreed that women in administrative positions tended to possess various attributes considered favorable to success in school administration (i.e., practicality, flexibility, willingness to give time to work). The background data questionnaire elicited basic demographic information (i.e., sex, age, marital status, and educational history).
