Description PSI/Malawi began operations in 1994 with the introduction of Chishango male condom brand and in 2008, PSI/Malawi introduced CARE female condom brand. In addition to the product oriented programs, PSI/ Malawi implements health and development communication programs supporting primarily HIV/AIDS prevention. The 2011 Measuring Access and Performance (MAP) study was the fourth round, following previous surveys in 2005, 2007 and 2009. MAP studies allow programmers to make an assessment of product availability and accessibility using pre-defined criteria for coverage, quality of coverage and access. Its goal is to increase the overall efficiency of social marketing of products and service delivery systems. The main objectives of PSI/Malawi 2011 MAP study were to: Monitor the coverage and quality of coverage of Chishango male condoms and Care female condoms. Monitor market penetration of condoms in high risk areas (hot zones). The MAP methodology employs the Lot Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS) technique to draw a random sample of 19 Enumeration Areas (EAs) from each of PSI/Malawi's Sales Zones and in the country's main urban areas (Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba). The LQAS assessment of coverage determines the proportion of EAs in each Sales Zone in which the product is available. In addi
tion to providing a basic measure of product coverage, the LQAS assessment also determines "quality of coverage" for instance, the proportion of EAs in each Sales Zone or urban area in which the product conforms to additional minimum standards.
