Description

The purpose of this study is to provide an assessment of the key safe water, hygiene, and sanitation behaviors, determinants, and exposure to PSI programming among mothers and caregivers of children under the age of five in four peri-urban areas of Southern Sudan, where PSI is implementing a Management Sciences for Health funded project to decrease prevalence of diarrheal disease. A representative sample of this target population living in peri-urban areas of Juba, Yei, Wau, and Malakal will
be drawn each time the survey is conducted in order to ensure comparability of data for trend analysis. Mother or primary caregivers aged 18-49 with children under five will be administered the diarrheal disease questionnaire.

A total of 1660 households were to be visited in order to achieve an interview response level of 1020 that were completed for the baseline study. Only eligible households were interviewed which accounts for the lesser sample size than originally calculated. Analyses consisted of frequencies and correlations to ascertain which determinants are associated with key behaviors, and to examine the association between location and changes in health behaviors and determinants.
