This study is part of a program of in-depth surveys on the population fertility and related factors in various provinces and municipalities of China.. The study aimed to improve understanding of the levels and trends in fertility of the Chinese population and to provide the government with reliable data useful in the formation of population policy.

Data were collected in April 1985 in the provinces of Shaanxi, Hebei and Shanghai. Topics focus on fertility and family planning. The Community questionnaire questions covered conditions of production, income, public facilities, transportation, education, health care, and family planning services.

In the household questionnaire details were collected on demographic characteristics such as age, sex, marital status, household conditions, cash income, availability in the household of selected modern conveniences.

The individual level questionnaire of ever-married women under age 50 living in households, focused on marriage and pregnancy history, child health and care, knowledge and use of contraceptives, fertility preference, fertility intentions and attitudes.
