This study was originally conducted through the Population Institute at the University of the Philippines, Bureau of the Census and Statistics as a part of the National Demographic Survey in 1973. Later, Donald Treiman from the Sociology department at UCLA obtained the data and coded the responses with prestige scores to examine the respondents' occupations . The final results of the study were one of the many data sets used to construct an International Socio-Economic Index of occupational status (ISEI), comparing social and economic mobility patterns in various nations.
