Description |
The original data files (raw data) have the suffix of "*.DAT". "Codebook" files (not the same as the documentation codebook) have the suffix of "*.COD". The original files were cleaned (OpenReform) and exported as Comma-separated Values. The cleaned files delimiter is either a comma or semi colon. Files names are in lower case and were test by loading into Microsoft Access. Data files are numeric with text identification and information in the Codebook files. The documentation codebook contains detailed descriptions and file layouts for linking files. he Soviet Data Bank is a computerized data base that contains extensive information on Soviet bureaucrats' biographical and officeholding hkxies. The present version (version 1.0) of the Soviet Data Bank provides this data on people who held a bureaucratic office at some point between 1917 and 1941. Although most of the data are confined to the period before 1941, there are many records that extend beyond that year. At present, me Soviet' Data Bank contains data on some 28.000 individuals. The data found in the Soviet Data Bank come from one of three types of sources: government personnel directories. published sources, and private raeprch files Many of the officeholding records in the data bank come from Vsia Moskva, the personnel directories that list the officials of the USSR, RSFSR. Moscow oblasf, and Moscow city government, party and trade union bureaucratic offices housed in Moscow. All extant editions of Vsia Moskva for the interwar years have been coded, they are: 1923. 1925-1931. and 1936. In addition. biographical and office holding information have been culled from a variety of Soviet and western sources Finally. the personal research files of Professors Sheila Fitzpatrick. G. Ronald Suny. and J. Arch Getty have been coded and entered into the data bank. We wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to these scholars for contributing their personal data files to the project. Without their contributions, the scope and quality of the data base would be greatly diminished |
