Description |
The PIP compiles information about parties, governments, 1st & 2nd chambers and presidents, and combines them with ideological data about parties (e.g. left-right positions). In addition, various aspects of the European Union (EU) are covered e.g. the composition of the European Parliament and the Commission. The PIP main dataset covers 36 countries from 1944 to 2020. The dataset is available as a quarterly time-series–cross-section-file where each observation equals one quarter per party. Consequently the information about party ideology can be combined with various information about the composition of governments, parliaments or presidents in a multifaceted way, e.g. to estimate the policy-position of the government (coalition), to determine the median-position of the 1st chamber, to estimate veto player ranges etc. As such, it forms the base for applying the Agenda Setting Power Model (ASPM) framework. Beyond creating independent variables for macro-comparative policy-research, the main dataset is also suitable for examining ideology-related research questions concerning (party) politics. To ease merging the PIP with other party datasets, party identifiers are based on the Manifesto Project's scheme and can be cross-linked via PartyFacts. |
