Description This chapter investigates the effects of immigration on European democracies. After taking stock of the impact of international migration on European societies, it examines how such demographic processes relate to political and economic developments. Furthermore, the analysis sheds light on changes in public opinion over time, describes differences and similarities across countries, and examines the effects of the 2015 immigration and refugee crisis. It also shows that there is a relationship between democracy, politics, and the economy, and preferences regarding immigrants, the regulations of immigration, and refugee policies.
