Description |
Tungiasis (sand flea disease) is an ectoparasitosis occurring in South America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. It belongs to the so-called 'Neglected Tropical Diseases', a term for a group of diseases affecting the poorest of the poor living in tropical and subtropical conditions and with only very few treatment options. Tungiasis is associated with severe morbidity, not only affecting the physical integrity of its victims, but also being a mental and emotional strain to them. It seems perfectly logical that tungiasis impairs the life quality of infected patients. However, this issue has never been assessed.
