Description

These survey data include a series of questions on perceived threat by a number of immigrant groups in Switzerland. The survey was funded by swissstaffing, and carried out in May 2013 by gfs.Zürich. The core are two questions asking about the perceived threat of neighbours (different families moving to a neighbourhood, sitting next to the respondent in the bus). The questions were designed by Didier Ruedin as part of commissioned research funded by swissstaffing.

Translation of the key questions into English:

Introduction to the survey: "We take a short survey on sympathies and fears of the population in relation to people from their neighbourhood or from more distant areas."

Question block on neighbours: "Suppose in your neighbourhood an apartment becomes vacant. In the following, several families are mentioned as possible neighbours. Tell me for each family how concerned or threatened you feel. [10 represents a major threat, 5-6 is a medium-sized threat and 1 means no or almost no threat. With the numbers in between you can grade your answers.]"

Question block on bus: "Imagine you take the bus and someone sits down next to you. In the following, different people are mentioned. Tell me for each person how concerned or threatened you feel."

The survey used telephone interviews of individuals eligible to vote in national elections: Swiss citizens aged 18 or over (N=1,008). The canton of Ticino was not covered for reasons of research economy. They survey is representative, and for age and sex, random quotas were used.
