Description |
Grewia optiva is a multipurpose agroforestry tree species of the north-western, western and central Himalayas, highly used for green nutritious fodder during winter season. Nutritional, phytochemical and antioxidant studies were done in leaves, flower and fruits of Grewia optiva. The parts were collected from September to January and varied from vegetative to reproductive growth stages. The leaves in vegetative stages showed more total aqueous soluble protein and carbohydrate content while leaves in highest maturity stage showed increased total phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. Total antioxidant activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of flower were >2, >4 and >1.4 times, respectively, higher than the average value of those of leaves in all growth stages. Considering quality nutritional and antioxidant attributes, its leaves along with flower and fruits were proposed to be harvested in winter season (November-January) of fodder shortage for the welfare of livestock farmers in hilly areas.
