Description Fruit-based agroforestry can be considered as an alternative land-use system under red and laterite soils of humid and sub-humid zone. A field trial on arable crops was conducted during the years of 2017-18 to 2018-19 within the fruit-based AFS of ten years-old stands of Amrapalli var. of mango (Mangifera indica) with gamhar (Gmelina arborea) started since July 2007; and three years-stand of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), planted in September 2014 with ten years’ of a stand of gamhar, planted in July 2007 at the Regional Research Station (Red and Laterite Zone) of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya at Jhargram, West Bengal, India. Arhar (Cajanas cajan) was grown from mid-July to February; and two rainy season crops viz., green gram (Vigna radiata) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) from mid-July to end of September, followed by toria (Brassica campestris, var. toria) in the winter season (rabi: October to March). Toria was grown on residual soil moisture after harvest of rainy season crops. From the field experiment with alley crops within fruit-based agroforestry systems, it was revealed that fruit-based AFS were not only capable of increasing wood growth, fruit and crop productions but also was able to improve soil health by increasing status in soil pH, SOC, available N, P, K contents in soil; and maximum improvements were obtained from the AFS plots intercropped with arhar, cowpea and gramgram.
