Description In various agro-ecological zones of the nation, birdshave been known to severely damage a range of crops at theirsusceptible stages. The amount of bird damage to any croprelies on a variety of factors, including the density of the localbird population, area covered by the crop, cropping pattern,season, and the physiological condition of the birds. It hasbeen identified that about 1200 species of birds belonging to20 different families and only 2% of it damage the crops. TheGrey Partridge (Perdix perdix), Blue Rock Pigeon (Columbalivia), and House Sparrow (Passer doemsticus) have beenfound to cause the maximum damage to crops. Other specieswhich nest close to agricultural areas include the Rose-ringed parakeet (Pscittacula crameri), Baya weaver (Ploceusphilippinus), Tricoloured munia (Lonchura malacca), andSpotted dove (Spilopelia chinensis) also extensively damage thecrops. Moreover, it has been documented that bird damagevaried with respect to seasons, areas, number of species, theirdensity, concentration of migrants, and their feeding patterns.It was also more prevalent in the isolated fields that maturedslowly or quickly. In order to attain the desired yields, theproduction system must be safeguarded and birds pests mustbe effectively managed to reduce crop losses. While traditionalmethods for managing predatory birds include erecting aperch amid crop fields, scare crows and drumming, the eco-friendly methods of controlling birds include modifyinghabitat, block plantations, reflective ribbon, reflective paperplates, and hybrids that are resistant to birds
