Description Dr. Pulak Kumar Ghosh, born on29th May 1932 in Kolkata, began hiscareer at CAZRI in 1961 as a JuniorScientific Officer in the Divisionof Special Animal Studies. Shortlyafter joining, he was honoured witha UNESCO Fellowship and workedwith Nobel Laureate Professor K.Schmidt-Nielsen at Cornell University, USA.Upon returning to CAZRI, he played a pivotalrole in establishing state-of-the-art laboratoriesdedicated to the study of physiology,biochemistry, nutritional requirements, andbio-energetics in various animals such as sheep,goats, cattle, camels, as well as wildlife ecologyand rodents.From 1978 to 1982, Dr. Ghosh served asthe Head of the Division of Animal Studies,contributing significantly to its growth anddevelopment. He further extended his impactas the Project Coordinator for the All IndiaProject on Rodent Control during the periodsof 1982 to 1985 and 1990 to 1992.Known for his intellectual prowess,Dr. Ghosh believed in fosteringenduring partnerships to elevateresearch standards. Notably, heestablished a fruitful collaborationwith Professor Victor Macfarlane andProfessor Evans in Australia, withboth visiting CAZRI multiple times, therebyenhancing the institute’s research initiatives.In addition to his administrative roles,Dr. Ghosh served as the Editor-in-Chief ofthe “Annals of Arid Zone”, showcasing hiscommitment to scholarly communication.Retiring on 31st May 1992 from CAZRI, hespent the latter part of his life in Kolkata untilhis passing on 19th November 2013. Dr. PulakKumar Ghosh is fondly remembered by hiscolleagues and friends for his warmth, wit, andintelligence. His principles and strong characterhave left an enduring impact on those fortunateenough to have known him.
