Description The Pepper Research S•ation, Panniyur, the first pepper research station in India, started functioning in June 1952. An attempt has been made in this review to bring out the salient contributions made by the Station during the last 25 years of its existence. In lice initial years, the Station was mainly engaged in collection of germplasm and their evaluation, des prior of impo:rant cultivars, standardisation of cultivation practices, including inter¬criture operations, manurial requirements, etc. Later, the work of the Station was on floral biology and hybridization technique. Developing control measures for pollu belle, and srudies on quick wily and slow wilt diseases are some of the recent programmes now under¬taken at the Station.
The evolution of the hybrid pepper cultisar Panniyur-1 is the outstanding achievement of the Station. It has helped to make the name Panniyur a household word with the pepper growers and all others connected with the pepper industry.
