Description |
Field experiments were conducted at Agricultural Research Station of Tamil nadu Agricultural University, Bhavanisagar (111129' N Latitude and 771'08' E Longitude and at Altitude of 256 m MSL), India during 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons to generate information on phenology and dry matter distribution. Turmeric varieties BSR 1 and BSR 2 were planted at 15'h May, 15'h June and 15'" July and thermal time (TT) required to attain different phenophases viz., P, -50 % emergence, P-50 % of the plants with first tiller and P, . 50 % of the leaf drying at maturity were calculated by keeping temperature 13°C as base (T b)' On an average, (of two years) BSR 1 planted at 15th May, 15th June and 15th July took 3591.0, 3095.9, 2874.0 degree days for maturity, respectively. In case of BSR 2, it was 3801.5, 3364.3, 3025.1 degree days. Delayed planting resulted in low yield which was proportional to cumulative thermal time (CTT) A positive correlation (r2 =73.1) between CTT required for maturity (x) and fresh rhizome yield (Y) was observed. Distribution of dry matter (DM) between root, shoot and storage rhizome was estimated and found that proportion of allotment was between shoot and root at emergence and it increased progressively up to 150 days after emergence (DAE). The shoot DM declined thereafter, but root DM was maintained up to maturity. The dry weight of rhizome slowly increased from 15 DAE to150 DAE and thereafter, steady increase noted. The dry matter increase was proportional to thermal time accumulation.
