Description Six varieties of black pepper were selected as apparently drought tolerant based on their relative water content, membrane stability and number of days taken for wilting from the drought tolerance screening using forty four black pepper varieties. Biochemical characteristics associated with the water stress tolerance in these varieties were studied by exposing the selected six tolerant varieties and one susceptible variety to different levels of soil moisture stress. Drought tolerant varieties showed maximum percentage increase in enzyme activities of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase on exposure to water stress. When severely water stressed. high levels of lipid peroxidation were observed in the drought susceptible variety Panniyur-l as compared to the tolerant varieties. Among the varieties evaluated Panniyur-5 possessed the best biochemical characters to tolerate water stress. The variety Pinniyur1 was relatively poor in these adaptations.
