Description |
Spices find use in flavouring, cosmetics, perfumery and indigenous medicine. The paper covers the technology for increasing production of spice crops like black pepper, cardamom, ginger turmeric, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and all spice. Tremendous efforts are made by National Research Centre for Spices, Calicut for the preservation and evaluation of spices germplasm. Several varieties have been developed in a span oft(m years for high yield, superior quality and 'other attributes like resistance to pests and diseases. Standardization of agrotechnologies include selection of suitable standards for training pepper and formulation of better nursery practices and fertilizer package for various spice crops. Significant achievements have been made in research on pest and disease control especially employing integrated approach. Protocols for rapid clonal multiplication and production of disease free planting materials involving biotechnological methods have been standardised in cardamom, black pepper, long pepper, ginger and turmeric. Development of technology for the micro propagation of tree spices is another field there work is fast progressing.
