Description The present study was conducted on the histogenesis of prenatal thyroid gland in Surti goat foetuses of three different age groups. The study elucidated the development of the thyroid the thyroid gland capsule, primary epithelioid cells differentiating into prefollicular epithelium, folliculogenesis, and colloidal secretion in prenatal Surti goat. At 4.0 cm crown-rump length (40 days) of development the thyroid primordium showed irregular epithelial cords with many mesenchymal cells in between them. At 7.0 cm crown-rump length peripheral capsular connective tissue started differentiating from the underlying mesenchymal tissues. The thyroid parenchyma at 10.2cm comprised of epithelial cords with numerous blood vessels. At 12.2 cm crown-rump length (64 days) the thyroid parenchyma showed well defined thyroid follicles lined with simple cuboidal epithelium. The follicular cells within these large follicles were high cuboidal with apically positioned prominent spherical nuclei and interfollicular space was wider. The interfollicular space occupied by the primitive mesenchymal cells which were spindle shaped nuclei at 140 days of fetal development.
