Description The cross-section household dataset was collected by ICRISAT and Swedish Agriculture University (SLU) within the scope of the research project titled " The Dynamics of Urban Sprawl: Land-use Changes, Food Supply & Sustainable Agriculture Production Systems in the Arid & Semi-Arid Zones", funded by the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences, and Spatial Planning (FORMAS). The primary aim of the study was to analyze the impact of urban sprawl on food and nutritional security, emphasizing key aspects such as nutrition transition, shifts in land use, epidemiological changes, and the socioeconomic status of respondents residing in urban and peri-urban areas of Hyderabad, Telangana, India.
The dataset comprises a longitudinal panel of data collected over four rounds from about 1300 individuals belonging to 660 households, spanning from 2018 to 2021. The household survey data was collected using the Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) method utilizing CSPro software. The survey modules covered various aspects, including socio-demographics, perceptions of urban sprawl, food and nutritional status, government development/welfare programs, consumption expenditure patterns, food safety, dietary diversity, and migration. Consumption expenditure patterns and dietary diversity were consistently collected in all four rounds. Urban sprawl perceptions were explicitly obtained in the first survey round, collating respondents' views on the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of urban sprawl alongside their experiences and perceptions regarding food security. The nutritional status assessment included the respondents' anthropometric readings and morbidity patterns that were collected for three consecutive survey rounds. The fourth round also featured data on respondents' activity profiles and time allocation for these activities (activity logs).
Beyond the four primary rounds, additional data was gathered during the pandemic period (December 2020-January 2021) through virtual/telephonic surveys to comprehend the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on urban and peri-urban dwellers and their coping strategies. While only 325 households from the initial 660 could be interviewed during this telephonic survey, it covered the post-lockdown period and three phases of restriction withdrawal (unlock). The information collected included aspects such as labour force participation since the lockdown, pandemic-induced impacts on health, income, food security, consumer behavior, and challenges faced in farming during the pandemic.
This comprehensive dataset offers significant potential for researchers and policymakers alike, especially those concentrating on the critical issue of food and nutritional security among urban and peri-urban populations.
